I’m sure many of you are familiar with German company, Miele. The manufacturer of high-end domestic appliances is one of the most recognisable brands in Europe, with over 20,000 employees and an annual revenue in the billions. But I wonder how many of you have heard of Miele X.

Established in 2020, Miele X is Miele’s global digital marketing and sales hub. Headquartered in Amsterdam, its mission is to shape an exciting digital future for the trusted, iconic Miele brand. Shortly after its inception, I was asked to produce a series of compelling employee profiles for the company’s new website.

Image courtesy of Tupungato – stock.adobe.com

Execution

At the time, Miele X was going through a rapid expansion, bringing together diverse, innovative and talented teams to deliver data-driven digital experiences for its customers. My brief was to position Miele X as an industry leader and showcase the city of Amsterdam, with a view to attracting Europe’s best and brightest digital talent.

Liaising with senior personnel at Miele X, I researched each of the featured employees in turn and prepared a set of tailored questions. I then interviewed the subjects via Zoom and drafted the outlines for the articles. Once the client signed them off, I wrote up the final pieces.

Impact

My articles captured the unique journey of each employee, charting their career path and highlighting their experience, skills and goals. Through their stories, I was able to demonstrate Miele X’s commitment to diversity, inclusivity and innovation, portray Amsterdam as a vibrant, global hub, and showcase the company’s forward-thinking, meritocratic culture.

I completed all work to the satisfaction of the agency, client and subjects, meeting every deadline and hitting every point in tone, style and structure. The finished articles featured prominently on the company’s revamped website, which was subsequently shortlisted for the 2023 RAD awards in the ‘Employer Website’ category.

Today, Miele X is turning over more than $70 million per year, and in the last 12 months alone, it’s increased its employee count by a whopping 102%[i].

Small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are the backbone of our economy, making up more than 99% of all private sector businesses in the UK and employing some 16 million people[1].

Unfortunately, for some, the past few years have been tough, with the fallout from Covid and the current financial squeeze affecting businesses up and down the country. So in these fragile economic times, how do you stay competitive, productive, and above all, profitable? One way to give yourself an edge is to maximise your content.

To help you improve your company’s online presence and get the most out of your website, blog or brochure, here are four simple content writing hacks.

1. Look after the basics

Your online content is usually the first point of contact for potential customers, whether that’s your website, social media posts or email campaigns, and typos, bad grammar, or poorly written copy can be damaging.

According to a report by the BBC, grammatical errors could be costing UK businesses millions of pounds in lost revenue, with one expert claiming that a single spelling mistake can cut online sales in half[2].

So when it comes to your web copy, blog or socials, it pays to be accurate. Take the time to create clear, concise content, and your business will reap the benefits.

2. Make an impact

Ensuring your content is free from typos is a good start, but if you want your voice to resonate with your audience, it’s going to take more than a keen eye for detail.

We’re visual creatures, and building an appealing, eye-catching website is a great way to capture new clients; but it’s no good spending thousands of pounds on the look and feel of a site if you then proceed to populate it with flabby, uninspiring text.

Consumers can have short attention spans, and if you don’t spark their interest someone else will. Make your copy impactful, purposeful and engaging, and you’ll turn browsers into buyers.

3. Keep it simple

A good way to engage potential customers and nudge them a little further along the sales funnel is to make your copy simple and accessible.

Write short, punchy sentences to grab your reader’s attention and keep things conversational by using contractions – ‘you’re’ instead of ‘you are’, ‘don’t’ instead of ‘do not’. This way, potential customers will feel like you’re talking directly to them, putting them at ease and creating a sense of trust.

Remember, you’re not writing for an English Literature professor. As long as your copy is captivating and compelling, people will forgive the odd misplaced comma. Get the fundamentals right, and you’re good to go.

4. Give yourself a voice

As we’ve established, a conversational tone can be far more impactful than bland, formulaic prose. Marry it with a bold, distinctive tone of voice (TOV), and you’ll really begin to cut through the noise.

Before you start reeling off page after page of copy, think carefully about your TOV. It should be unique to you, appropriate for your products and services, and above all, it should speak to your target audience.

For example, if you’re an online clothing retailer focusing on 18-35-year-olds, you might want to keep things light and breezy; whereas, if you’re dealing in finance, you might choose to adopt a more professional tone.

Whatever you decide, if you truly want your content to drive sales and help you stand out from the crowd, you need a clear, well-defined tone of voice.

Start a conversation

Carefully crafted copy is a simple, cost-effective way to engage your audience and mark you out from your competition. And if you’re not making the most of your online content, you could be missing out.

Britain is facing its biggest drop in living standards on record, with food and energy bills soaring and inflation reaching a new 40-year high. So as the cost-of-living crisis deepens, what does this mean for charities and non-profit organisations?

For many, it may be tough, with demand for services increasing and people less inclined to give up their time and money. In such a precarious climate, it’s critical that charities and non-profits do their best to maximise fundraising opportunities. One way to achieve this is through the written word.

Words are a powerful tool, and with the right tone and style, a well-crafted article can move hearts and minds. For charities and non-profits, it’s a great way to highlight important issues and draw people to your cause. To help you get the most out of your blog, newsletter or website, I’ve compiled five helpful tips for writing engaging, actionable copy.

1. Know your audience

Before you begin, it’s important to think about exactly who you’re writing for. In a perfect world, everyone is a potential patron, but we’re all different, shaped by our character, demographic, and life experience. What might be a burning issue to some, may seem trivial to others.

So before putting pen to paper (or rather, fingers to keys), think carefully about your target audience – who they are, how to reach them, how best to engage and inspire them.

2. Grab their attention

No matter how worthy your cause, if you fail to deliver a compelling narrative, people will soon switch off. Engage your readers by telling human stories – simple, relatable accounts that get to the heart of what you do and reflect who you are as an organisation. Pick pertinent topics, focus on success stories, and keep your audience emotionally engaged with direct quotes from volunteers, case workers and beneficiaries.

3. Strike a positive tone

Aim for an assured, confident tone of voice, and keep things light and conversational where possible. This will help you connect better with your audience, build trust, and put people at ease. Strike the right tone, and readers will feel like you’re talking to them, not at them.

It’s fine to tug at the heartstrings, but always try to put a positive spin on things. Don’t sugar-coat the truth, but even when dealing with the most difficult subjects, it’s important to offer a glimmer of hope. If it’s all doom and gloom, people may think it’s a lost cause and become uninvested.

Instead, give solid, relatable examples of what you’ve achieved so far and outline your goals for the future. This way, you can galvanise your audience, make them feel part of the solution and inspire them to come on the journey with you.

4. Keep it simple

Less is more. Begin with a pithy intro, enough to pique the interest and encourage people to read on. Keep word counts below 800, sentences short and succinct, and break up the text with images and sub-headings. Remember, you’re telling a story – no matter how stark the subject matter, it should always be engaging.

Try not to get too bogged down in facts and figures. The odd stat here and there is fine to illustrate a point, but the key here is to get your message across. Dense text, punctuated with endless references and footnotes will only turn people off.

5. Inspire action

Finally, and perhaps most importantly, you want your audience to act, whether it’s making a donation, volunteering, or simply signing up for a monthly newsletter. To create a sense of urgency and elicit a response, you need strong CTAs (calls to action).

Choose your words carefully. Your CTAs should feel seamless, not forced – a natural extension of your blog or article. For example, if you’re writing about the sterling work of your volunteers, you might encourage people to seek out volunteering opportunities in their local area.

Don’t ambush your audience with ‘salesy’ slogans, like “sign up now”, and avoid lazy signposting, such as “click here” or “learn more”. Your call to action should be simple, original and persuasive.

The robot uprising is coming! Or so it would seem, given the recent clamour surrounding a new AI chatbot. ChatGPT, as it’s known, is an artificial intelligence-powered content generator – literally a writing machine. And according to a recent article in The Guardian, it could soon make content writers like me, redundant[1].

So, should I be worried? Could a machine ever really capture the same subtle nuances of tone, style and structure as a human writer? Given the billions of pounds Microsoft has pumped into the project, it would certainly appear so.

However, ChatGPT is not without its detractors, and with the AI-driven chatbot facing fresh controversy this week, things may not be as straightforward as we think. So, is it really time to bow down to our robot overlords, or is there still a place for a jobbing writer in today’s digital world?

What is ChatGPT?

Since its launch last November, ChatGPT has created something of a stir, making headlines on both sides of the Atlantic and capturing the imagination of millions. So what’s all the fuss about?

Brainchild of US start-up, OpenAI, ChatGPT has been specifically designed to produce natural, conversational copy, mimicking a living, breathing human writer. That represents a big leap forward from other writing platforms, like Grammarly, which, while they employ certain AI techniques such as machine learning, still have people at their core.

So where does that leave the humble content writer? Out of luck? Out of work? Well, perhaps not. According to reports, the software is still a little clunky. Fine for businesses looking to churn out reams of generic copy, but somewhat of a non-starter for those seeking a more targeted approach, with a distinct style and tone of voice.

So, for now at least, if you want to populate your website, blog or socials with concise, engaging and actionable content, you’re still better off with a human writer.

What is the latest controversy surrounding ChatGPT?

It’s not all been plain sailing for the creators of ChatGPT. While many have lauded the ground-breaking programme, it’s also had its fair share of critics, most notably, Twitter chief, Elon Musk.

Speaking earlier this week, Musk called for AI systems like ChatGPT to be suspended amid fears of a threat to humanity. And he isn’t alone. A number of key industry figures echo his sentiments, claiming that the race to develop AI systems is out of control, joining Musk in signing an open letter warning of the potential risks.

Perhaps more damaging is the news coming out of Italy this week, with the country’s data protection authority announcing it will be blocking ChatGPT indefinitely due to growing concerns around data security.

By no means a hammer blow, but if other western countries were to follow Italy’s lead, ChatGPT could face an uncertain future. That would be bad news for Microsoft, which has already sunk billions into the programme, with a view to embedding a version of the technology in its Office apps, including Word, PowerPoint and Excel.

Should I use ChatGPT to write my content?

So what about the here and now? Grim predictions aside, could AI systems like ChatGPT really have implications for freelance content writers like me? The short answer is yes, with a resounding, but.

The truth is, if you’re looking to save time and money and populate your website with page after page of generic content, then ChatGPT may be worth a punt. However, if you want to tell an inspiring story, develop a unique tone of voice, and stand out from your competitors, then a traditional flesh-and-blood writer is still your best bet. For now, at least.
